Our Kitchen Renovation

I have been asking to renovate our kitchen for years.  And I honestly thought we were years away from doing it.  But lo and behold, it happened.  haha.  We started clearing things out on the 15th of December, started construction on the 20th, and finished on the 31st.  We knocked down 2 1/2 walls, erected one wall, retiled, moved a water line, phone line, multiple electric lines and a light fixture… and considering our contractor took 3 full days off, we finished really, really quickly!!  And it’s hard to explain without pictures, and if I do progress by day it gets confusing, so I have broken it down into progress by area.  Here we go!

This is the before.  This is looking from the craft room into the house.  The wall directly ahead is the 1/2 wall – we cut the wall down to the depth of the cabinets.  The wall the bookshelf is against was removed.

Immediately after you stepped through the craft room door, there was a small pantry to the right.  It housed our big freezer + pots and pans and non-perishable storage.  I forgot to take a picture of the before so this is after we started removing stuff.  the wall the metal shelf is against was removed.

This is the set of walls we removed.  We saved the cabinets above the fridge and put them on the new wall.  So basically the wall straight ahead and the wall the cabinets are hung on were removed.

And this is the 1/2 wall… the one we cut to the depth of the cabinets.

And this is the view from the living room looking towards the kitchen.  Again, I forgot to take before pictures but you get the idea.

And from the kitchen/oven area looking at the new wall where the fridge moves to.

Oh and to explain the tile – apparently every 4-ish years, tile changes.  So the tile we put in when we built the house 20 years ago is nowhere to be found.  We did buy extras, but needed more than the 9 tiles we had left.  So the question was simply, “what the hell do we do now??” Haha!  And the answer was to tear up extra tiles and create an area rug effect.  That way it can look different without being weird or costing us a lot of money to replace the whole living room + dining room too.  Did I forget to mention that with the exception of the bedrooms, the entire 1st floor is tiled in this white tile?

Phew that was a lot of work and mess to deal with, especially during CHRISTMAS.  Oh and did I mention we had 30 people over for dinner on New Year’s Day?  Haha.  Talk about stress getting the house put back together… with the exception of the craft room.  Lots to deal with in here, but I’m working on it!  We definitely couldn’t have done it without the help of some wonderful family members.  Thanks Grandpa for the electrical, AJ for the cleanup/organization, C&K for the cabinet-holding!

lovies, =o) kel
